1903 until 2014

1903 until 2014

We capture some of the most relevant moments in the development of tourism in Karlsruhe from 1903 to 2014!

  • 02.11.1903The Karlsruhe Tourist Office is founded as a registered association with the aim of promoting tourism in Karlsruhe and the surrounding area.

1913The office of the Karlsruhe Tourist Office was located "in the town hall, on the ground floor, to the right of the main entrance, room no. 2." The office could be contacted on telephone numbers 46 and 84 and provided free brochures, guides, maps, hotel lists and directories of places of interest.

    06. - 08.10. 1928To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the association organized the 1st Karlsruhe Festival of Lights in 1928, to which over 90,000 visitors travelled by train to the fan-shaped city.

1930sThanks to its numerous members, who held influential positions in business, banking, the hotel industry, the military, the civil service and the city administration, the Verkehrsverein played a key role in significantly increasing tourism and thus the number of overnight stays in Karlsruhe.

1938The tourist office publishes the Karlsruhe weekly magazine "Verein zur Hebung des Fremdenverkehrs".

1939The beginning of the Second World War means the temporary end of the tourist office.

The association succeeds in building on the old days and, with the now primarily scientific and medical congresses, the city birthday in 1965 and the Federal Garden Show in 1967, the number of visitors to Karlsruhe increases to a new record level.

1970sThe generally worsening economic situation in the 1970s led to a significant decline in the number of overnight stays in Karlsruhe; a trend that could only be slowly halted in the following years.

1984The first city information center in Karlsruhe is opened in the building of Hofdruckerei G. Braun, today Verlag Braun, at Karl-Friedrich-Str. 14.

The Verkehrsverein Tourismusregion Karlsruhe e.V. will continue to operate as an independent association and is made up of service providers in the hotel, catering, trade, craft and cultural sectors as well as citizens interested in tourism and organizational bodies such as sports and cultural associations.

" Press and blogger trips are simply great for meeting a wide variety of people and inspiring them when they visit Karlsruhe. I particularly remember a group press trip from the USA in 2017 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of cycling: 18 of the 20 participants had never been on a bike before or hadn't been on one for more than 20 years. The bike tour was more than adventurous and we must have had more than one guardian angel that day. But somehow we made it to all the sights unscathed and in the end we rode up to the castle square in bright sunshine. Lynn, a 50-year-old Texan, turned to me and beamed: "That was amazing and Karlsruhe is so beautiful!". I could only agree with her. "

" Before the launch of our Karlsruhe CityTour in May 2016, we carried out test drives to subject the planned route to a live test. At that time, we were still using a bus without proper lettering, but with the logos of the Stuttgart CityTour. In glorious weather, we drove through Karlsruhe and Durlach with the roof open. Along the test route, we were warmly welcomed by the people of Karlsruhe with waves and cheerful shouts. At the traffic lights on Durlacher Allee, we were accompanied by applause and at the Durlach Karlsburg, various Durlach residents and boules players shouted: "Gell, it's nice here!".

Of course, we waved back with a wink on behalf of Karlsruhe Tourism and Stuttgart Tourism! Anyone who still had any doubts knew from this point on: finally we're getting a Hoho bus tour too. "

" An experience from last year: When an older gentleman entered the TI, I greeted him and asked how I could help him. He wanted advice on a city tour for a class reunion, which I was happy to give him. However, he immediately replied that I couldn't do that as I wasn't sitting behind a screen. With a wink, I then referred him to my colleague Petra, who was sitting behind that very screen and dedicated herself to him. A few days later, he came back when Petra and I were sitting behind the screens. He greeted us and I took the liberty of saying: "Look, now I've also acquired the expertise and can give advice behind the screen!" We all had to laugh, but he continued to take advice from Petra. "
