Karlsruhe State Art Gallery
While the main building of the Kunsthalle is closed for renovation, the traditional art museum at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media is showing highlights and lesser-known works from the collection in the presentation KunsthalleKarlsruhe@ZKM - A New Look at the Collection.
Visitors can expect a cross-section of the collection from the late Middle Ages to the present day. Works from Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt to Rachel Ruysch and Paul Cézanne to Max Beckmann, Pia Fries and Sean Scully are on display. The exhibition offers the opportunity for fresh perspectives on familiar pictures and for the rediscovery of rarely shown works from the collection.
An extensive educational program invites visitors to get to know the collection and its works in a variety of ways.
The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe sees itself as a mediator between past, present and future. The focus is not only on preserving the legacy of several centuries, but also on the current dialog with the historical collection and its high-quality expansion. The Kupferstichkabinett, which houses more than 90,000 prints, is one of the oldest collections of graphic art in Europe. With over 150,000 volumes, the library is one of the largest publicly accessible museum libraries in southern Germany.
The art library of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe awaits you on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 4 pm in its new premises at Hermann-Veit-Straße 6.
Opened in 1846, the Kunsthalle is one of the few early German art museums to have retained much of its original substance and furnishings. It has three historic buildings on the edge of the Botanical Gardens: the Main Building, the Orangery and the Young Art Gallery.
The reopening of the Orangerie at Hans-Thoma-Straße 6 is planned for spring 2025 and will complement the presentation of the collection at the interim location ZKM I Center for Art and Media.
