Guided Tour: From the Washhouse to the Architecture Firm

Designed as a progressive community facility, the Dammerstock washhouse replaced the arduous task of hand-washing with modern technology. It was not until the widespread adoption of private washing machines in the late 1960s that the facility was decommissioned. In 1974, the building was repurposed by the firm Rossmann + Partner. The conversion into an architectural office is now regarded as a successful example of the balance between functional office design and the preservation of a historic building.

A short presentation about the washhouse is given every hour on the hour. The washhouse is open to visitors at all times. Staff from the architectural firm Rossmann + Partner will be happy to answer any questions.

Time: 11 :00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m., 12:00 p.m. – 12:15 p.m., 1:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m., 2:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.

  • The central laundry building (Waschhaus) was an important functional, social, and communal component of the Dammerstock housing cooperative. Built in 1929 by architect Otto Haesler, it allowed residents to wash and dry their laundry in a central location using state-of-the-art washing machines. This building—which was progressive and highly functional by the standards of its time—also houses the central heating system that serves the entire Dammerstock housing cooperative.
