Originally, Weinbrenner's grave was located here in a "prominent setting" and was often visited at night. Join us on a tour of his former grave and discover the special location of the cemetery.
The tour leads to a place steeped in history: the former grave of Friedrich Weinbrenner. Although his grave no longer exists today, traces of his time and work can still be found here. Numerous graves of extended families have been preserved to this day and provide an insight into the funeral culture of the early 19th century.
Particular attention is paid to the design of the tomb in the form of sarcophagi, as was also chosen for Weinbrenner himself. This form is linked to the contemporary enthusiasm for Egyptian motifs, which is also reflected in Weinbrenner's architecture.
Furthermore, the location provides an opportunity to discuss Weinbrenner's ideas on urban expansion: the first cemetery had to make way for his plans for the Via Triumphalis – an impressive example of how closely urban development, architecture, and commemorative culture are linked.
