The war is over! Victorious, Claudio, Benedict and Don Pedro return to Governor Leonato. They long for a peaceful future in which love and festivities rule the day. While Claudio enters into a romance with the governor's daughter Hero, Benedict engages in ironic verbal battles with Leonato's sharp-tongued niece Beatrice. As a joke, the company develops a plan to make the two squabblers fall in love. Don Pedro, on the other hand, can't stop destroying things and sets up an evil plot to prevent the wedding between Hero and Claudio. Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare's most dazzling comedies. With the rhetorically dueling couple Beatrice and Benedict, he provides an early comedic commentary on the debate about the battle of the sexes. The characters constantly vacillate between truth and deception. Between appearance and reality, their love and friendship are put to the test.Â
The young British director Lily Sykes, who has already staged highly acclaimed productions of classics and new drama at Schauspiel Graz, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Schauspiel Frankfurt and Staatstheater Darmstadt, is making her directorial debut in Karlsruhe. Most recently she directed at the Berliner Ensemble. The Austrian press writes about her: "Sykes is rightly celebrated for her radical, demanding, but also ambiguous theatrical language."
