Under the exhibition title “Update! A Fresh Look at the Collection,” the Kunstmuseum Karlsruhe is presenting its collection anew, featuring some 200 works by 70 artists. The art collection has now grown to over 20,000 works.
Since 1997, it has been on display in Hallenbau, one of Germany’s largest industrial monuments. Its foundation dates back to private collections in Karlsruhe from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it primarily comprises German painting and sculpture from the Romantic period to the present day, though European prints and Japanese woodblock prints are also part of its diverse holdings.
In 1996, with the Garnatz permanent loan, the museum also acquired one of the most significant private collections of German contemporary art, which primarily expanded the collection’s photography holdings.
