In the first half of the 20th century, there were numerous competitions for (male) choirs. One competition that enjoyed great popularity was the Gausängerfest. Since 1926, this choir meeting was organized annually for the Sängergau Karlsruhe and took place in the Festhalle Karlsruhe in 1928. The music teacher and composer Ludwig Baumann, known for his male choirs, created a "Mourning" cantata on selected biblical passages for the third Gausängerfest.
On October 7, 1928, the afternoon concert of the choir meeting took place under the direction of Baumann, which began with a tribute to the fallen and was framed by Baumann's funeral cantata "DenGefallenen zum Gedächtnis, den Trauernden zum Trost". Six male choirs from Karlsruhe, a school choir and the Landestheater orchestra took part in the premiere.
The vhs orchestra, the vhs choir under the direction of Christine Schulz, the choir of the Ev. Hoffnungs- und Versöhnungsgemeinde and the project choir founded for this concert will perform the rarely performed Karlsruher Kantateca. 90 years after its premiere. The soloist will be soprano Lea Lamparter . In order to make this concert possible, the work, some of whose material has only survived in manuscript form, is being republished by DennisRied (Edition Lilienteich, Karlsruhe)."
