The struggles of three strong women in a family epic: Nora, who is first treated like a precious toy by her father and then by her husband, tries to break out of her doll's home. Hedda finds neither her former lover nor her husband an equal partner. And Ellida, the woman from the sea, is faced with overpowering men. She has never had a free choice, has never actively decided for or against marriage to Dr. Wangel and the adoption of his two daughters. The battles they fight continue in the present and expand in the future. For how can a woman be boss, mother, lover and daughter all at the same time, look dazzling and always be in a good mood?
In her opening production, director Anna Bergmann interweaves and counteracts the wishes, hopes and also the deep despair of Ibsen's female characters on three time levels. Bergmann most recently worked at the Burgtheater and the Theater an der Josefstadt in Vienna, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Stadsteatern in Malmö and Uppsala. In Karlsruhe, she staged the opera La Bohème as well as Drei Schwestern and Antigone at SCHAUSPIEL. The author Ulrike Syha received the 2018 Heidelberger Stückemarkt Authors' Prize for her play Drift.
