Jewish citizens have lived in our city since its founding. On this tour, we will visit places that were once part of Jewish life. We will discuss Jewish biographies and eyewitness accounts, as well as persecution and deportations during the Nazi era.
Route A:
Matzen, Mikveh, Menorah
Jews have lived in our city since its founding more than 300 years ago. On this tour, we will visit places where Jewish life took place and where there used to be, for example, a Jewish hotel, a school, a cemetery, a kosher butcher's shop, and what the Nazis called a "Judenhaus" (Jewish house). Jewish biographies and eyewitness accounts will be discussed, as will persecution and deportations during the Nazi era. The tour also includes the three historic synagogue sites in downtown Karlsruhe.

Route B:
Jewish artists between assimilation and alienation
This city tour will provide an insight into cultural life in Karlsruhe through Jewish personalities from the worlds of art, literature, and music in the 19th and 20th centuries. After 1900, a modern, cosmopolitan zeitgeist gradually emerged in the arts in Karlsruhe, which was supported by Jewish artists. In the 1930s, despite defamation and persecution, they fought as long as possible against nationalist and anti-democratic tendencies that were increasingly gaining ground in Karlsruhe.
