Is it allowed to say that? Freedom of expression, its limits and the law
with Thorsten Feldmann, specialist lawyer for copyright and media law.
Between freedom of expression and personal rights, between public interest and protection against fake news - the issues surrounding press and expression law are more topical than ever. While debates on social media are accelerating and extreme positions are intensifying, journalists, activists and private individuals are increasingly confronted with injunctions or hate speech. How much opinion is allowed? Where does freedom of the press end? And who sets the limits?
The guest for this edition of the interactive discussion series "Let's Talk About Law" is Thorsten Feldmann . The specialist lawyer for copyright and media law is a partner at JBB Rechtsanwält:innen, one of the leading law firms in the field of media and expression law, and represented the research platform Correctiv, among others, in 2024. Together with Marie-Elisabeth Miersch, research associate at the foundation, Feldmann will discuss the challenges and pitfalls of public communication.
The event will take a look at current issues: What are the legal limits for expressing opinions in public and online? How does the law protect against false information and abusive criticism - and where are restrictions on the free press imminent? When does investigative journalism become unlawful defamation of character? And which new developments in media law are currently particularly controversial? The foundation cordially invites the public to participate in the discussion with questions.
Admission is free of charge. Registration is not required.
