Reading with Helmut Ortner: "Heimatkunde": False truths - true lies

The book is about a repressed German past and a contaminated present, about religious arrogance and secular defense, about populist politics and contempt for democracy, about autonomy and conformism. Ortner's essays are a passionate plea for an open, democratic society - against backward-looking populists, conspiracy theories and religious fanatics. The former editor-in-chief of "Journal Frankfurt" presents his new book "Heimatkunde - Falsche Wahrheiten, richtige Lügen" in Karlsruhe.

An evening full of provocative diagnoses of the times and clever reflections. Listen to Ortner's astute analyses and essays in defense of democracy and join in the discussion afterwards.

The gbs Karlsruhe e. V. association has organized the reading. The Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs) is a think tank for humanism and enlightenment, to which many well-known personalities from science, philosophy and art have joined, including Helmut Ortner.

The reading will take place on Tue., 21.01.2025 at 19:00 in the Zieglersaal at Restaurant Akropolis, Baumeisterstraße 18, 76137 Karlsruhe. Admission is free. Books can also be purchased there.

Helmut Ortner has published more than twenty books to date - mainly political non-fiction and biographies. His books published by Nomen include "Dumme Wut, kluger Zorn" (2018), "EXIT - Warum wir weniger Religion brauchen" (2019), "Ohne Gnade - eine Geschichte der Todesstrafe" (2020), "Widerstreit - Über Macht, Wahn und Widerstand" (2021), "Der Hinrichter: Roland Freisler - Mörder im Dienste Hitlers", as well as "Volk im Wahn - Die Wege der Nazis" (Edition Faust, 2022) and "Das klerikale Kartell" (2024). His books have been translated into 14 languages to date. Helmut Ortner lives and works in Frankfurt and Darmstadt. He is a member of Amnesty International and on the advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation.
