"In the war against immigration, looking the other way is the most effective weapon."
The descriptions of the rescue missions of the Sea Watch 3 crew off the coast of Sicily, which the German-Iranian comic artist Adrian Pourviseh accompanied as an observer and sea rescuer four years ago, are breathless and oppressive. The inhuman tension between missions, the fear of repression by the Frontex states and Libyan irregulars, who abduct refugees from international waters on behalf of Europe, and the highly professional execution of their missions, in which a few moments can make the difference between life and death -
Adrian Pourviseh's"Das Schimmern Der See" is a drawn eyewitness account of the terrible everyday life at Europe's external borders and a loud call for more humanity, an intense graphic novel.
Adrian Pourviseh (*1995in Koblenz) studied Oriental Studies (B.A.) in Marburg and Rabat and Development Economics (M.Sc.) at Lund University in Sweden. He also attended summer schools in Tehran, Alexandria and Uppsala and worked on climate research projects in Namibia and Pakistan as well as for the US Agency for International Development. In 2015, he began working as an interpreter for young refugees alongside his studies. In 2019, he joined the Sea-Watch 3 as an interpreter and photographer and volunteered on the island of Lesbos. He recorded his experiences on the Sea-Watch 3 as illustrated diary entries, which later became the template and inspiration for this book. Adrian came to comic writing when he saw the need to tell new perspectives. He lives as a freelance comic book author in Berlin.Â
