HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
In East Berlin in the 1980s: Driven by a desire for freedom and affection for an American soldier, young Hänsel undergoes gender reassignment surgery, which enables him to leave the country and look forward to a future in America. Hansel becomes Hedwig. But the operation goes wrong and what remains is a feeling of disorientation and an inch of the most unloved part of her body. Years later, the talented but internationally ignored rock singer Hedwig is confronted with her own tragicomic past. First performed as an Off-Broadway show in 1997, not only the 2001 film adaptation of the punk-glam-country-rock musical, but also the Broadway production with American series and film star Neil Patrick Harris, which won four Tony Awards in 2014, bear witness to the cult character of this incomparable musical.
The press described his direction and choreography of the musical Spring Awakening at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar as a "grippingly realized musical sensation" - now the director of the JUNGES STAATSTHEATER Otto A. Thoß is also bringing a musical to the stage in Karlsruhe. Jazz singer and composer Cindy Weinhold has already thrilled audiences in Lyrisches Liebesleid. Together with her band "Box of Birds", she brings Hedwig's rock concert to life. Loud, cheeky, emotional and honest - the only way to break down walls!
