"Georges Méliès last trick" - Theater Drak (Czech Republic)
Cultural Center Tollhaus Karlsruhe
Alter Schlachthof 35, 76131 Karlsruhe
In this truly turbulent performance, Theater Drak visualizes the history and work of the great cinema pioneer Georges Méliès - an astonishing performance about the beginning of the silent film era. The play plays with every conceivable means to surprise its audience again and again and take them on a delightful journey into the world of magicians and their tricks. Georges Méliès was the first to use these tricks in films, effects that still amaze us today with their inventiveness and artistic poetry. The performance and its protagonist use celluloid film strips, illusions and fantasies as weapons with which to fight anything. Even death. Perhaps... Georges Méliès (1861 - 1938) was supposed to take over his father's shoe business, but he preferred to draw. In London, he saw a magic show that fascinated him so much that he became a magician himself. He bought his own theater, which was always sold out because he made women disappear and turned them into butterflies. Then he discovered the work of the Lumiére brothers. This was the starting signal for a brilliant career as a film director who founded the world's first film studio.Theater Drak is one of the leading puppet theaters in the Czech Republic and its productions are performed all over the world.suitable for children aged 12 and over!
