BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns. Network thinking
Today, more data is produced per day than in decades. A new science is needed to cope with this amount of data: the visualization of characteristic nodes and networks, parameters and patterns.
The exhibition BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns. Network Thinking invites you to discover the invisible data structures in their visible network visualizations by physicist and network scientist Albert-László Barabási and his research laboratory from 1 May 2021.
With the exhibition BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns. Network Thinking, the ZKM | Karlsruhe presents the work of the Hungarian physicist and network scientist Albert-László Barabási (*1967, Cârța, Romania) and his research laboratory based at Northeastern University in Boston, USA. Over the past 25 years, the BarabásiLab has developed a visual vocabulary for complexity, often relying on forms of expression taken from art.
The innovative and interdisciplinary field of network research enables the analysis of a wide range of cultural and social phenomena by making invisible, hidden connections and repetitive patterns within nature, society and culture visible. Network science is used in fields such as medicine, pharmacy and physics, but also in the research of infrastructures, social systems and development processes.
The exhibition, realized in cooperation with the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Hungary, provides for the first time in Germany a comprehensive overview of the forms of visualization developed by the BarabásiLab, which are the product of a collaborative process involving scientists, artists and designers alike. Without imposing a reductionist framework on the complexity of our world, the works of the BarabásiLab reveal the hidden patterns in complex systems that determine our biological and social existence.
