Taster course on analog film projection
About a decade ago, digitization abruptly and completely transformed the cinema landscape. Within a short time, movies were no longer shown in theaters on film reels, but as files on hard drives—and now even as downloads.
Although digital projection offers many advantages, we place great importance on continuing the tradition of analog film screenings. Whenever a 35mm print of a film is available, we prefer it to the digital format whenever feasible and appropriate. We’ve noticed that our audience appreciates our love for analog. The screening room—that secret place where the light comes from—has often been opened upon request. But from now on, people are flocking here; come by for the workshop and lend a hand when it’s time to say, “ACTION!”
The workshop offers the following content:
- a detailed look behind the scenes of the analog film screening in the Blue Salon
- An introduction to the history of film projection and to identifying different types of film stock as well as image and sound formats
- the analysis of the film material and preparation for the screening
- Manual loading and screening of analog film material, also in cross-fade mode with two projectors

We offer this four-hour introductory course for €40 per person. Reduced rate: €20. Free for HfG students.
