Description
Our suggested route
Start at the Tourist Information in the Schaufenster Karlsruhe directly on the market square. Here you will receive our Genuss-Safari backpack with a route map, bamboo cutlery set for two and a picnic blanket. You will also receive a Karlsruhe cap, a wooden craft pyramid, a badge and a seed mix.
About the market square with Karlsruhe's landmark, the pyramid, the route continues along the Via Triumphalis, past the Weinbrenner buildings such as the Protestant city church and the town hall, to the first stop at the Badische Backstub' (open on Sundays until 1:30 pm): here you will find a large selection of bread, rolls, pastries and many other snacks.
Alternative: Café Hatz (Sun 9:00 - 19:00).
Head back towards the market square via Hebelstraße to Ehrlichs Wein-Contor. The wine store offers more than 500 types of wine for every occasion, as well as a select range of (raw milk) cheeses, delicatessen products, oils and a small and very fine range of delicatessen products. Here you will find your favorite wine as well as the "very special" from many regions of the world for your picnic backpack.
Continue in the direction of FriedrichsplatzIt is a green oasis in the middle of the city and invites you to take a short break from everyday life. In the State Museum of Natural History there are exciting exhibitions and exhibits to marvel at, such as an earthquake simulator, a 12-metre model of a flying dinosaur or the largest coral reef living in Germany.
The Schmidt bakery is located next door in Ritterstraße and you can watch the bakers at work. The bakery and sales area are in the same room and are only separated by a half-height pane of glass. Enjoy freshly baked bread, rolls, sweet pastries and vegan baked goods at any time.
Alternative: Badische Backstube on Rondellplatz (open until 1.30 p.m. on Sundays)
Passing the Ständehaus and St. Stephen's Catholic Church, leave Friedrichsplatz behind you and continue towards Ludwigsplatz until you reach Stephansplatz: this is where the weekly market is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. weekly market takes place here. Whether fruit and vegetables, sausages, exotic spices or French specialties - everyone can find their delicacies here.
If you follow the yellow ray along Waldstraße in a south-westerly direction, you will reach the Pâtisserie Ludwig. True to the motto "Life is too short for crispbread", you will find tartlets, macarons, eclairs, pralines and delicious classics such as Gugelhupf. The sweet pâtisserie is not only super yummy, most of it is also gluten-free and some of it is even vegan.
If you follow the "sun fan" back towards the castle, another culinary highlight awaits to fill your picnic basket. Because: it's delicatessen baby! At El Corazón offers 88 different types of gin and many other spirits such as whisky, rum and vodka as well as fine delicacies and spices.
Very close to the delicatessen store in Waldstraße is the Wilkendorf, a traditional tavern. For 135 years , Waldstraße 22 is still the first address for excellent quality teas. With a bit of luck, you can taste a freshly brewed tea on the spot.
Continue to the Café Rihopposite the architectural showcase. Here you can relax and enjoy. In the former exhibition rooms of the Badischer Kunstverein, you can enjoy a coffee to go in the atmosphere of a modern café with extraordinary architecture. The extensive cake display case also leaves nothing to be desired.
In the immediate vicinity is also the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. As one of the oldest German art museums with fascinating architecture, a visit to the museum is a special spatial experience. Around 800 works from the late Middle Ages to the present day are on display in the main building and the Orangery.
If you continue along the "Zirkel", after a few minutes you will reach the Square of Fundamental Rights. On the way there, you can always catch a glimpse of Karlsruhe Palace via the Fächerstraßen.Â
Fancy some homemade ice cream? A short hop to the CLAUS Eismanufaktur where the ice cream is freshly made in the ice cream kitchen with a special focus on a selection of natural and regional ingredients with no artificial additives. A scoop of poppy seed marzipan, peanut crunch or watermelon lime? Or would you prefer all three together?
Now it goes directly towards the castle, across the Square of Fundamental Rights to the Karl Friedrich monument on the palace forecourt. Here you will always find a cozy or shady spot to enjoy the delicacies from the Genuss-Safari bag at a picnic in the countryside.
