Our suggested route
Start at the Karlsruhe Tourist Information Center right on the market square. Here you will receive our gourmet safari backpack with a route map, a bamboo cutlery set for two people, and a picnic blanket. You will also receive a Karlsruhe cap, a wooden craft pyramid, a pin badge, and a seed mix.
About the market square with Karlsruhe's landmark, the Pyramid, the tour continues along Via Triumphalis, past Weinbrenner's buildings such as the Protestant City Church and the Town Hall, to the first stop at Badische Backstub' (open Sundays until 1:30 p.m.): Here you will find a large selection of bread, rolls, pastries, and many other snacks.
Alternative: Café Hatz (Sun 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.).
Heading back towards the market square, take Hebelstraße to Ehrlichs Wein-Contor. This wine shop offers more than 500 varieties of wine for every occasion, as well as a select range of (raw milk) cheeses, delicacies, oils, and a small but exquisite assortment of gourmet foods. Here you will find your favorite wine as well as something "very special" from many regions of the world for your picnic basket.
Continue in the direction of FriedrichsplatzIt is a green oasis in the middle of the city and invites you to take a short break from everyday life. In the State Museum of Natural History there are exciting exhibitions and exhibits to marvel at, such as an earthquake simulator, a 12-metre model of a flying dinosaur or the largest coral reef living in Germany.
The Schmidt bakery is located next door in Ritterstraße and you can watch the bakers at work. The bakery and sales area are in the same room and are only separated by a half-height pane of glass. Enjoy freshly baked bread, rolls, sweet pastries and vegan baked goods at any time.
Alternative: Badische Backstube on Rondellplatz (open until 1.30 p.m. on Sundays)
Passing the Ständehaus and St. Stephen's Catholic Church, leave Friedrichsplatz behind and turn onto Herrenstraße at St. Stephen's Church Square to reach Pâtisserie Ludwig . True to the motto "Life is too short for crispbread," they offer tartlets, macarons, éclairs, pralines, and fine classics such as Gugelhupf. The sweet pâtisserie is not only super yummy, but also mostly gluten-free and even vegan in some cases.
Continue towards Ludwigsplatz until you reachStephansplatz: Here, the weekly market takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. weekly market . Whether you're looking for fruit and vegetables, sausages, exotic spices, or French specialties, there's something for everyone here.
If you follow the yellow beam along Waldstraße towards the south-west, you will come to another culinary highlight where you can fill your picnic basket. Because: It's delicacies, baby! At El Corazón
, there are 88 different types of gin, many other spirits such as
whisky, rum, and vodka, as well as fine delicacies and spices.
Following the yellow beam back towards the castle, you will find the Traditionsteehaus Wilkendorf. Located at Waldstraße 22, the tea has been for 135 years and is still the premier address for excellent quality teas. With a little luck, you can taste a freshly brewed tea on site.
Continue to the Café Rihopposite the architectural showcase. Here you can relax and enjoy. In the former exhibition rooms of the Badischer Kunstverein, you can enjoy a coffee to go in the atmosphere of a modern café with extraordinary architecture. The extensive cake display case also leaves nothing to be desired.
The Karlsruhe State Art Gallery. As one of the oldest German art museums, with fascinating architecture, a visit to the museum is a special spatial experience. Around 800 works from the late Middle Ages to the present day are on display in the main building and the Orangery.
Continuing along the "circle," after a few minutes' walk you will reach the Square of Fundamental Rights. On the way there, you can catch glimpses of Karlsruhe Palace from the fan-shaped streets.Â
Fancy some homemade ice cream? Just pop over to CLAUS ice cream factory is definitely worthwhile: here, the ice cream is freshly made in the ice cream kitchen, with a special focus on a selection of natural and, as far as possible, regional ingredients without artificial additives. A scoop of poppy seed marzipan, peanut crunch, or watermelon lime? Or would you prefer all three together?
Now it goes directly towards the castle, across the Square of Fundamental Rights to the Karl Friedrich monument on the palace forecourt. Here you will always find a cozy or shady spot to enjoy the delicacies from the Genuss-Safari bag at a picnic in the countryside.
