Open Monument Day. Existence and appearance - in history, architecture and monument preservation

Open Monument Day on the 12th September 2021

Making culture accessible and visible to everyone is the aim of the annual Open Monument Day, which takes place every second Sunday in September. Whether it be churches or bunkers, castles or industrial buildings, private houses or botanical gardens – the doors to fascinating monuments are opened and free guided tours are offered both indoors and outdoors. With different themes each year, professional and voluntary conservationists prepare exciting stories about otherwise inaccessible sites within the city of Karlsruhe and its surrounding area. But it is not only the secrets and stories of these hidden places that are to be discovered on the Monument Day itself. Numerous sites can be explored digitally in advance.

True to this year's motto, “Existence and Appearance – in History, Architecture and Monument Preservation”, guided city tours, external viewings and the traditional Organ Walk are on offer for all those interested in the region’s rich architectural heritage. As long COVID-19 restrictions allowing, the numerous monuments can also be explored via guided indoor tours.

The whole program of the event is available here in German.
