Rastatt Palace, the palace of “Louis the Turk,” is the earliest Baroque residence on the Upper Rhine. In constructing the three-winged palace and designing the gardens and the royal town, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm and Margravine Sibylla Augusta drew inspiration from the Palace of Versailles as well as from the aristocratic palaces in Vienna.
The state and private apartments, with their impressive decorations, are open to visitors as part of a guided tour. Vibrant frescoes by Italian artists, tapestries, furniture, and the stories of their former residents bring the Baroque era to life even today. The side wings house the Museum of Military History and the Memorial to the Freedom Movements in German History.
