Square of fundamental rights
The square, which was created in 2005, is located in front of Schlossplatz. 24 double-sided street signs deal with the topics of law and injustice - with statements by judges, lawyers and citizens who came into conflict with the law.
Description
In 2005, the city of Karlsruhe donated the Platz der Grundrechte to the Federal Constitutional Court as part of its bid to become European Capital of Culture 2010.
The artist Jochen Gerz collected statements on 24 signs dealing with the subject of law and injustice - from judges, lawyers and citizens who had come into conflict with the law. The local council decided to install the signs on the square between the Zirkel and the castle, declaring it a square of fundamental rights.
A second version of these signs was erected at decentralized locations in Karlsruhe.Â
