Nature Conservation Center Karlsruhe-Rappenwört
In the middle of the forest, surrounded by the Old Rhine, on the Rhine island of Rappenwört lies the Karlsruhe-Rappenwört Nature Conservation Center. Large wooden sculptures and game enclosures with wild boar, red deer and fallow deer line the path from the streetcar stop at Rheinstrandbad to the center.
Description
A modern permanent exhibition provides an insight into the nature of the Rhine floodplain. Numerous display boards and models illustrate the history of the Rhine, the ecological importance and value of the floodplain and the threats posed by human use. The transformation of the Rhine floodplain can also be traced in computer simulations. A 3D real-time visualization allows visitors to playfully follow a dyke collapse scenario on the Rhine.
In a children's and family adventure room, nature conservation topics and information about the Rhine floodplain are presented in a playful and child-friendly way. Visitors young and old can also accompany "Pitsch", the big blue drop of water, on his exciting journey through the water cycle. The nature conservation center also has an information desk with a store.
Various temporary exhibitions, lectures, seminars, workshops, nature experience days, vacation programs and children's birthday parties are offered throughout the year. Natural history and nature education tours are also part of the program. In addition, visitors can also use facilities such as the forest adventure trail and the math trail on their own, learn interesting facts about the floodplain forest with a small mobile outdoor guide or track down the "floodplain geocache" using a GPS device.
Bauhaus in the nature conservation centerÂ
The construction of the nature conservation center (former municipal ornithological station) by Walter Merz, together with the Rheinstrandbad, forms the central part of Mayor Schneider's green space planning for the "Rheinpark Rappenwört". Here Schneider laid the
laid the foundation for applied natural history lessons in Karlsruhe schools. The ornithological station also played a key role in the fight against mosquitoes. The different uses of the interior rooms resulted in the grouping of the
one- to three-storey four buildings: the director's residence, the classroom, the bird house and the assistant's residence. Despite its changing function, the building has remained almost unchanged to this day. It was last reopened as a nature conservation center in April 1997.
