St. Matthew's Church

St. Matthew's Church, Vorholzstraße 47, 76137 Karlsruhe

The architects Hermann Reinhard Alker and Hermann Zelt designed the minimalist, functional little Matthäuskirche. It was consecrated as a Protestant church in 1927 and was originally only built as an emergency church for the south-west of the city, as inflation meant that no major building work was possible.

Emil Sutor (crucifix and angel in the vestibule) and August Babberger were responsible for the artistic design. The floor tiles had a pattern of red bricks, the walls were in gray-blue tones, and a brown-red pattern
was chosen for the ceiling. The windows had green-blue tones. The interior was redesigned during the renovations in 1972 and 2008.
