PROTEST THE HERO

1999 gründeten die damals noch 14-jährigen Schüler Rody Walker, Tim Millar, Luke Hoskin, Moe Carlson und Arif Mirabdolbaghi die Band unter dem Namen Happy Go Lucky. Mit der Veröffentlichung ihrer ersten EP Search for the Truth im Jahre 2002 benannte sich die Band in Protest the Hero um. Während der Wochenenden und der Ferien arbeiteten die fünf Jugendlichen an weiteren Songs, spielten erste Konzerte und eine Tour. So erschien 2003 mit A Calculated Use of Sound eine weitere EP. Nach dem Gewinn des Canadian Independent Music Award in der Kategorie „Favourite Metal Artist/Group“, veröffentlichte die Band am 30. August 2005 ihr Debütalbum Kezia, welches erst am 4. März 2006 auch in den USA ebenfalls unter Vagrant Records erschien. Die Songtexte, alle von Bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi geschrieben, handelten von Kezia, einer Frau, die durch ein Erschießungskommando hingerichtet wurde. Auffällig ist, dass die Texte aus drei Perspektiven geschrieben worden sind: der eines Priesters, eines Gefängniswärters und Kezia selbst. Nach Veröffentlichung des Albums tourte die Band mit Bands wie As I Lay Dying, 3 Inches of Blood und Killswitch Engage durch Kanada und die USA. Im Januar 2008 erschien das zweite Album der Band unter dem Namen Fortress, mit dem sie den ersten Platz in den kanadischen Charts erreichten und es für eine Woche auf Platz 95 der Billboard 200 schafften. Veröffentlicht wurde das Album, wie der Vorgänger über Vagrant Records. Die Texte stammten ebenfalls von Bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi. Am 29. September 2009 veröffentlichte die Band ihre erste Live-DVD Gallop Meets the Earth, auf der sich Konzert-Mitschnitte eines Auftrittes in Toronto befanden. Am 22. März 2011 erschien das dritte Studioalbum Scurrilous über Vagrant Records. Auf ihrem am 2. November 2013 erschienenen Album Volition spielte Chris Adler von Lamb of God das Schlagzeug ein, da Moe Carlson die Band zuvor verlassen hatte. Voilition wurde bei den Juno Awards 2014 mit einem Award in der Kategorie Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year ausgezeichnet.

Their latest release, From Nothing, earned widespread critical acclaim and a spot in Loudwire's Best Prog Metal Albums of 2025, positioning them among the scene's most forward-thinking acts. Known for their high-energy and unpredictable live shows, Benthos are a captivating force on stage, turning an intricate blend of prog metal, mathcore, post-hardcore and psychedelia into their signature volatile balance of melody and controlled chaos. Within the last four years, Monosphere have become one of the most respected independent bands from the German post & prog-metal scene. Not only did they support many of their idols and biggest inspirations such as Between The Buried And Me, Karnivool, The Ocean or Imperial Triumphant – they’ve been booked for direct supports to many big names in the metal scene including Cradle Of Filth, Napalm Death, Ne Obliviscaris or uprising acts such as Gaerea and Signs Of The Swarm to name but a few. Having toured with The Hirsch Effekt, DVNE, Rolo Tomassi and Wheel throughout big parts of Europe, they’ve already found their community (especially at festivals such as Euroblast & Hellseatic) that loves their versatile post/prog-metal style blended with influences from mathcore, post-rock, metalcore, black metal and even jazz, classical music, avantgarde. What’s most astounding, they never came off their path of aiming for a sound that feels fresh and unique, even neglecting any trends.
After having released two critically acclaimed albums independently – 2021’s prog-metal epos “The Puppeteer” and 2023’s concept album “Sentience” – Monosphere actively turned down all signing offers for their third album, which will once again be released independently. Their singles “The Unknown Voice” (2024), “Lapse” and “Nadir” (2025) already pointed to the musical direction that Monosphere take on their third full-length and once again made them stand-out within the German heavy music scene with their unique and unbroken artistic vision.
