Christmas in Karlsruhe

The Christmas period is always special, but in Karlsruhe it is a unique experience. Bathed in colourful lights, enveloped in festive aromas and resonating to the sound of carols, the whole town is transformed into a fairytale Christmas City!

Christmas markets

The unique and popular Karlsruhe Christmas markets, such as the Christkindlesmarkt on Friedrichsplatz or the Medieval Christmas Market in Durlach, are richly traditional events. Durlach is also home to the highest and smallest Christmas market in the Fan City at this special time of year.

Events during the Christmas period

Skating fans will flock to the magical Open Air Rink against the illuminated backdrop of the baroque Karlsruhe Palace, as the central gathering point during the festive season. The over 2,000 square metre Stadtwerke EISZEIT with an integrated circuit will be open to skating and curling enthusiasts for around nine weeks.

A miniature railway in the fairytale Kinderland St. Stephan goes round and round through a lovingly designed, enchanted forest. Talking fairytale houses and a kiddies’ train on St. Stephan Church square will bring a sparkle to the eyes of all visitors, big and small.

Karlsruhe boasts a lively cultural landscape that connects bygone ages with the modern day and blends art with technology. Around 50 theatre ensembles, museums, associations, networks and churches put on a richly varied program of events during the Christmas period, offering plenty of delights for any taste and in any style.

The seductively sweet scent of Christmas delicacies and warming mulled wine lingers in the air throughout the city, inviting you to take an indulgent break from shopping at the "Christkindlesmarkt" – an experience for all the senses that can only be found in the city, and certainly not online.
