Bundesgartenschau 1967

This year's Good Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the Federal Garden Show in Karlsruhe. The major event took place for the first time in Karlsruhe from April 14 to October 23, 1967 and was visited by over six million people.

In the 1960s, there was a growing need in Karlsruhe for more recreational and leisure areas for the population. For this reason, the Zoological City Garden and the Palace Garden were redesigned for the garden show. The popular Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Water Organ & Lake Stage were added to the City Garden. The Federal Garden Show was also the starting signal for the still famous Gondolettas on the Stadtgartensee lake.

The Garden of Stone Columns and the Water Garden were created in the palace garden. In addition, the castle garden lake was enlarged eightfold. The entire palace garden was connected by the now famous palace garden railroad.

The zoo was also redesigned, the hoofed animals were moved to Oberwald Zoo, for example, and the Karl Birkmann Bridge was built. It can be used to bridge the zoo and the Stadtgarten between the East Ticket Office and the Nancy Fountain in Bahnhofstrasse. The bridge is named after Karl Birkmann, the former director of the zoo from 1963 to 1979.

Even today, the people of Karlsruhe are grateful for their newly designed green spaces. Both gardens are still popular excursion and relaxation destinations, especially on warm summer days.
