As you approach Schwarzach, you can see the Romanesque cathedral from afar, which, together with some farm buildings and the former monastery gate, is a remnant of the Benedictine Abbey of Schwarzach, founded in the early 8th century and dissolved during secularization in 1803, an imperial abbey dating back to the work of St. Pirmin. The magnificent columned basilica was built in the 12th and 13th centuries over various predecessor buildings. It combines 4 architectural styles, with Romanesque dominating, Gothic manifesting itself in the pointed arched arcades of the crossing, while the wood-carved choir stalls from 1700 are from the Renaissance, and the organ and altar are in Baroque style.
