The Old Catholic Church of the Resurrection was built between 1895 and 1897 by Senior Building Officer Professor Carl Schäfer as a Neo-Gothic church on land donated by Grand Duke Friedrich I. The plans are based on drawings of a lost early Gothic church in France. The church, a single-nave cruciform structure with two stair towers and the main tower, features a distinctive element of medieval sacred architecture in the arrangement of its facade: The balcony above the main portal was used in the Middle Ages to display relics or other sacred objects to the people. The church, consecrated on June 8, 1897, by Bishop Dr. Theodor Weber, was decorated in the style of the time. On September 27, 1944, the church was destroyed down to its outer walls by incendiary bombs during a major air raid on Karlsruhe. In 1950, the parish council decided to rebuild the church, a project that was carried out in 1952–53. Professor Emil Lacroix (Karlsruhe State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments) was entrusted with the task. He left the sandstone masonry in the nave and transept unplastered. The organ was built in 1983 by Claudius F. Winterhalter of Oberharmersbach and is a popular concert instrument in the city of Karlsruhe. The organ, combined with the church’s excellent acoustics, makes it a popular venue for concerts by various choirs and musical ensembles. Since 1966–67, the main tower has housed four bells: the large Ecumenical Bell, donated in 1966 by Christians of all denominations; the Resurrection Bell; the Marian Bell; and the Peace Bell.

The Baden School Museum is a place of learning and remembrance. “School as it used to be”: Take a journey back in time to the school days of the 19th and 20th centuries. Slate boards, primers, quill pens, and inkwells—once faithful companions in the classroom—seem like relics from a bygone era in the age of laptops, cell phones, and the like. One historical highlight is the 1929 painting “Palmbacher Märchenwelt” by Hans Fischer-Schuppach, who was an art student at the time and later became a well-known German painter and graphic artist. A book titled “Palmbacher Märchenwelt” will be published in October, featuring all the fairy tales depicted in the painting.

The building, designed by Prof. Otto Bartning, a native of Karlsruhe, was dedicated in 1960 and handed over to the congregation. Bartning viewed the church interior as a sheltering, protective space set apart from the outside world. With the Word and the liturgy at the center and the congregation gathered around the altar, these remained his core principles and the form of the church interior appropriate to the Protestant worship service in the postwar era. The church serves as the hub of a network comprising full-time pastoral staff and the various groups within the congregation. This is where celebrations—whether of joy or sorrow—have been and continue to be held; the congregation meets here regularly!

The city gate was built in 1774 and once stood between the suburbs and the old town. In 1969, it was converted into a museum. Since 1970, the three floors of this historic building have housed the Heidelsheim Local History Museum. The museum features an exhibition of historical tools used in crafts and agriculture, as well as everyday objects from the kitchen, household, and fashion—many of which have fallen into obscurity in many places today. Artifacts from the history of the Heidelsheim Fire Department, local community life, and the town administration provide insight into Heidelsheim’s history. In the attic, visitors can see the 18th-century roof beam construction. A panoramic view of Heidelsheim and the Saalbach Valley is available.

The transverse church was built between 1774 and 1776 according to simplified plans by Johann Friedrich Weyhing to serve as a Protestant church, replacing a chapel. It was taken over by the Roman Catholic parish in 1908. To the east of the transverse-plan nave, which is covered by a hipped roof, stands the church tower, whose belfry houses a single church bell. The choir is located to the west of the nave. In 2025, St. Nicholas Church received an organ. The parish purchased the now 45-year-old instrument—originally built by master organ builder Wolfgang J. Braun—secondhand from a Protestant congregation in Schwetzingen. The organ, with eleven sounding stops, has a mechanical action and features two manuals and a pedal.
