"There's no place like home"... In our opening film in the "Cinema of Color" series, Dorothy and her dog Toto are catapulted into a colorful world by a hurricane. In search of the Wizard of Oz, she meets a scarecrow without brains, a tin man without a heart and a cowardly lion who help her find her way home. Based on the book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, a fantastic musical unfolds that was nominated for an Oscar for both the best original song ("Over the Rainbow") and the best original film score. The cult classic impresses with its iconic color and groundbreaking special effects and continues to influence pop culture today, including musicals and animated films.
The transformation when Dorothy steps out of her dreary black-and-white world into the suddenly colorful Technicolor world of Oz must have been a breathtaking experience in 1939. The division of light into the primary colors red, green and blue - each shot on separate strips of film and later combined into a single, colorful image - contributed significantly to the timeless popularity of the film and marked a revolution for film and television.
The film will be shown in the original language with German subtitles.
A 15-minute supporting film will be shown before the film : Le voyage dans la lune by director Georges Méliés, France 1902, 16mm, hand-colored and in the original version.
