Opera up close, eye to eye with the main characters: what would be inconceivable in a real opera house from the distance of the orchestra pit becomes virtual reality (VR) here: the virtual reality opera Digital Freischütz in four episodes of 15 minutes each is a fragmentary approach to the opera by Carl Maria von Weber and its thematic content. The four 15-minute parts do not follow any chronology or linear narration. They do not claim to retell the plot of the opera or make it possible to virtually experience the existing production in the Grosses Haus. Instead, they focus on specific themes and create new worlds that viewers can explore for themselves. In the various episodes, for example, you meet Kaspar at the end of a crown of thorns, follow Ännchen through a labyrinth, visit Agathe in a virtual forest and roam over a large Max mountain range.CyberRäuber, a Berlin artist collective consisting of Marcel Karnapke and Björn Lengers, enable individual staging in their VR experience through autonomous movement within the scene. In close cooperation with the ZKM Karlsruhe, image recordings were made with four soloists from the BADISCHEN STAATSTHEATER, which enable a close encounter with the artists in virtual reality.the sound recordings of selected titles from Freischütz with the singers Matthias Wohlbrecht, Ks. Ina Schlingensiepen, Ks. Konstantin Gorny and Agnieszka Tomaszewska, the BADISCHEN STAATSKAPELLE and the BADISCHEN STAATSOPERNCHOR under the musical direction of Johannes Willig form the musical foundation of Digital Freischütz. In addition to famous evergreens such as the "Jägerchor" or the "Jungfernkranz", arias by the main characters Max, Agathe, Kaspar and Ännchen can be heard - and in very different ways.
