The heat and the law
"Blessed are the times when human history did not affect the trees."
In 2021, a court in Karlsruhe ruled that the state has an obligation under the Basic Law to protect the civil liberties of future generations by taking action on climate change. But can the conflict between climate protection, economic liberalism, and political inertia be resolved?
The island of the State Theater becomes a time machine. The five performers on stage set out in search of answers. Away from "if" and toward "how." They show us that our world can be changed, taking us to the Aarhus Convention, to Paris for the ceremonial conclusion of the climate agreement, to Berlin at the center of federal politics, and again and again to Karlsruhe before the federal courts—allowing us to catch a glimpse of possible futures. Theater is a space for reconciliation in conflict, isn't it?
Die Hitze und das Recht (The Heat and the Law) is a tragicomic examination of the legal and political discourse surrounding the climate crisis and its relationship to democracy. It is a play that relies on lightness and humor, exploring the possibilities of imagination between reality, dystopia, and utopia.
