Comedy by Heinrich von Kleist, with a different ending by Maria Milisavljević
A jug has been broken and the case is before the court. It is up to the village judge Adam to find out who caused the damage – even though he knows full well that it was he himself who smashed the clay pot. During a night-time attempt to flee from Eve's room, her fiancé Ruprecht broke down the door just as Adam was about to assault Eve. Now all those involved are gathered in the courtroom, and to prevent what must come to light from coming to light, Adam uses lies, false claims, and intimidation to build a high protective wall around himself, which, however, gradually begins to crumble.
Heinrich von Kleist's play from 1808 deals with sexualized violence and interest-driven truth-finding, exposing patriarchal structures that not only hinder the investigation of these cases of violence, but actively try to prevent it. For the Badisches Staatstheater, award-winning playwright Maria Milisavljević has written a new ending that highlights the continuity of these male-dominated and misogynistic structures into the present day and ventures an attempt at a utopian counter-design.
