Karlsruhe saxophonist and bandleader Christian Steuber is opening big doors with his new big band project, bringing together a who's who of the southern German big band scene to form an astonishingly young, accomplished formation boiling over with enthusiasm. Many of the players got to know Steuber in the youth jazz orchestras of Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg or the Bundesjazzorchester as saxophonists or teachers. Their shared passion quickly became the driving force behind the project, which on the one hand celebrates the tradition of the great big bands, but on the other is also committed to more modern trends.
Special guest: Stefan Karl Schmid
Stefan Karl Schmid is "undoubtedly one of the most interesting saxophonists on the young German jazz scene" (jazzandrock.com). With a "nuanced tonal language" (Kölner Stadtanzeiger) and a constantly "alert intellect" (DLF), the German-Icelandic musician has already "found his very own style" (Mannheimer Morgen).
Whether as a saxophonist, clarinettist or composer - Schmid impresses with his attention to detail and virtuosity in a wide variety of projects and ensembles. His artistic work is characterized by a deep understanding of timbres and musical structures.
Schmid studied in Nuremberg, Cologne and New York, was a member of the German National Jazz Orchestra, curates his own concert series and teaches as a professor for jazz saxophone and ensemble at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts.
