Excursion on a special train to Lake Titisee
The Black Forest is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Baden-Württemberg. On 20 July, DBK Historische Bahn e.V., the operator of the "Swabian Forest Railway", is organizing a Black Forest cruise on rails. Enjoy the landscape, the imposing engineering structures on the line and immerse yourself in the cool waters of Lake Titisee, just like in the old days "at the open window" of the train. An ideal excursion with all-round service to start the summer. The special nostalgia train stops for boarding at Karlsruhe main station (10:08) and Rastatt (10:27).
This is followed by the exciting section of the Black Forest Railway between Hornberg, Triberg and St. Georgen: even today, over 120 years after its opening, the line is still considered a masterpiece of engineering. The challenge was to overcome the difference in altitude with the help of hairpin bends. This construction made it possible to overcome the 448 meter difference in altitude between Hornberg and St. Georgen with 39 tunnels and a viaduct. The straight line of 11 km was extended to a length of 26 km. Today, the line is generally only used by regional trains, but the DBK e.V. train brings back the unique flair of the express trains of earlier generations. Via the "Hintere Höllentalbahn" we reach Titisee at 1:14 p.m. after a further climb, where we can stay until 4:50 p.m. Titisee is located between Freiburg and Donaueschingen, nestled in the forest and
hilly landscape of the Upper Black Forest. Many consider Titisee to be one of the most beautiful lakes, making it one of the most popular excursion destinations in Germany. Titisee attracts visitors with its refreshing bathing lake of the same name and opportunities for short hikes, a boat trip or a leisurely stop for refreshments.
The return journey at 16:50 takes the Höllental line past the famous "Hirschsprung" to Freiburg im Breisgau. From there, the train takes the Rhine Valley line back to Rastatt (18:42) and Karlsruhe Hbf (18:58).
The train is catered with food and drink throughout the entire journey. The locomotive of the train, which consists of comfortable carriages from the 1960s, is the 110 228 electric locomotive from 1961, which has been refurbished in hundreds of volunteer hours and pulls the carriages from the 1960s.
Tickets for 2nd class (outward and return journey) are available from 45 euros in 2nd class, depending on the departure station. By using this offer, passengers not only enjoy a wonderful excursion experience, but also support the completely voluntary operation of the locomotive and carriage fleet. A seat reservation is always included in the price. Bicycles can also be taken along, but please book in advance for capacity planning.
