The Marktplatz is the most well-known square in the fan-shaped city. It forms the core of Karlsruhe’s city centre and is the crux of the urban cultural scene in Karlsruhe, alongside Kaiserstraße. It is also home to the hallmark of the city: the Pyramid.

Friedrichsplatz is the green oasis of the city centre. Centrally located, Friedrichsplatz invites visitors to take a break from the daily grind. Be it during summer with a refreshing ice cream or in winter at the Karlsruhe Christkindlesmarkt. As a venue for a long list of events, is it often livelier than any other square in the city.

Ludwigsplatz is primarily characterised by its wide selection of bars and restaurants and its “La dolce Vita” atmosphere. This is where the music is played, which you will notice if you pass by on a warm summer evening. Situated right on the cosy Erbprinzenstraße, you can enjoy the last rays of sunshine here after a long day of shopping.

Stephanplatz, the spacious square behind the renowned Postgalerie shopping centre, offers a lot of open space, that is often used in interesting ways. The vibrant farmers’ market and quaint flea markets offer a very different kind of shopping experience.

In addition to Marktplatz and Kaiserstraße, Europaplatz is a key location in Karlsruhe’s city centre. Situated in front of the Postgalerie shopping centre, it is a vibrant and much-frequented square and marks the beginning of the Kaiserstraße shopping street.

The “Euro”

Kronenplatz is located at the eastern end of Kaiserstraße and therefore leads the way into the heart of the fan-shaped city. Together with Europaplatz, Kronenplatz frames the main shopping areas in Karlsruhe city centre and also serves as a cultural meeting point for the youth of Karlsruhe. Its proximity to the Karlsruher Institute of Technology (KIT) means that it also attracts a lot of students to its cultural events.

Kirchplatz St. Stephan frames the St. Stephan Catholic church and is situated centrally, directly opposite Baden’s State Library and the well-known Friedrichsplatz. The church square is the perfect meeting point for families with children or for a theatre date.

The protected historical location of Gutenbergplatz is located in the west city district and is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in the city. The farmers’ market here is particularly popular, and is one of the oldest markets in Karlsruhe. However, there are also many cosy cafés and restaurants that are great places to spend your time!

The triangular Lidellplatz, also known as the “Lidell Quarter” is located in the city center east district and is characterised by its informal yet cosy charm. A children’s playground and independent shops and restaurants make the square into something truly special and invite visitors to take refuge from the bustling city centre.
