Durlach district

Durlach is the largest district of the fan-shaped city and is characterized by its beautiful historic old town!

General information

Durlach's historic city center

With around 30,000 inhabitants and a quaint town center, Durlach offers a special small-town flair. Stroll through the traffic-calmed medieval town center of Durlach and discover small cafés and restaurants that invite you to stop for a bite to eat.

Durlach was the residence of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach from 1556. In 1715, however, Karl Wilhelm moved his court to Karlsruhe, while Durlach remained an independent town.

Durlach was only incorporated into Karlsruhe in 1938. The historic town fortifications are still visible today in the picturesque townscape, some parts of which - such as the Basler Torturm - have been preserved. Buildings worth seeing include the town church, the Karlsburg castle, the former Renaissance palace, the market square and the town hall.

Today, the Karlsburg is home to the Pfinzgaumuseum, a branch of the city library and the Baden Conservatory, among other things. The Durlach Palace Gardens are considered to be the oldest gardens in Karlsruhe.
