Following the closure of the Schlachthof at the end of 2006, the area in the middle of the city became a new centre for cultural and creative professionals. The area offers artists and interested parties an extraordinary ambience for innovative ideas and a place to linger.

Gutenbergplatz is a popular square in the west of Karlsruhe with a variety of shops and restaurants. Here, Karlsruhe's oldest and loveliest weekly market takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7.30am. The square invites you to drink coffee and stay for a while. Two notable eye-catchers are the Krautkopf and pelican fountain.
