Introduction

A lot has been happening on Kaiserstrasse since the redesign began in April 2023. Construction is taking place in depth and the surface is being redesigned. At the same time, the Technical Town Hall on Marktplatz is being extensively renovated and the Peek & Cloppenburg area and southern Lammstrasse are also currently under construction.

The fact that building sites don't always cause noise and dirt, but also offer space for art and community, was proven not only by the tape art on the market square, but also the temporary artistic floor painting in Lammstrasse and Kaiserstrasse.

Construction sites as a space for creativity, community and experience - a cooperation between urban stakeholders

To revitalize the city centre, KME's city marketing department, together with the Quartier Marktplatz Carréthe Combo" team and the Mobile Youth Work of the City of Karlsruhe a temporary artistic floor painting on the areas that will subsequently become a construction site. construction site (Kaiserstrasse construction site 4b from August 2024 and Lammstrasse construction site 9 and 9a from November 2024). The aim was to enliven the urban landscape and the district and create unique visual accents. By integrating art into the urban space, the aim was to bring the community together and create a dynamic and inspiring environment that invited visitors to linger and proved that construction sites can also offer space for creativity, community and experience. At the same time, the aim was to observe what traces art, people and time leave behind in the city and how these change - it was about temporary art whose creation and abrasion by time and people are part of the concept ("urban traces").

The concept for the temporary floor art was penned by the "Combo" team and the City of Karlsruhe's Mobile Youth Work and promoted the active participation of young artists in the design process and in the community.

Text

Tulips as Karlsruhe's founding symbol and the focus of the new floor art

The design was inspired by the Karlsruhe tulip booksIn the center of the picture is an abstract tulip pattern that conveys a contemporary aesthetic through dynamic lines. Structured rays of sunlight radiate from the center of the tulip, a metaphor for the history of Karlsruhe's founding. Organic shapes flowed around the tulip in an interplay of green tones, while a stylized blue Rhine was represented in the background by abstract shapes. Together, they created a modern interpretation of the landscape. This composition combined dynamic lines and gave the picture a modern, urban feel.
