Table football tournament on the Karlsruhe market square
On August 1, 2024, the KME Karlsruhe Marketing and Event GmbH together with the Stadtwerke Karlsruhe hosted a table football tournament on the market square. Another coveted title was played out during the Summer Olympics in Karlsruhe city center: the 2024 Construction Site Foosball Cup. During the breaks in play, other Olympic disciplines could be experienced up close and tried out on the market square at the "Karlsruhe trains for the Olympics" sports action day. The Stadtwerke Karlsruhe drinking water mobile offered deliciously cool and free refreshment.
Starting at 5:30 p.m., a total of thirteen teams of four people put their talent to the test and competed for Karlsruhe gift vouchers, KSC tickets, vouchers for the Ettlinger Tor Karlsruheorganic beers from Fächerbräu and unique trophies with building site-character. The main focus was on enjoying soccer, team spirit and socializing.
After many exciting encounters in which the teams demonstrated fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and responsiveness, the following teams were ultimately able to claim victory in a hard-fought battle:
- 1st place: Torsion bar orgler
- 2nd place: Absolute giants
- 3rd place: Schmidt's cats
Participation in the Construction Site Foosball Cup 2024 was free of charge. However, registration was required by e-mail to meier@karlsruhe-event.de. The registration period ended on July 28, 2024. Experience and skills in table football were not necessary. There was no age limit. Mixed teams (m/f/d) were expressly desired!

As with every other tournament, there were also rules for this table football tournament that provided the framework for the event:
- Each team consisted of four people.
- 13 teams took part in the tournament, divided into two groups of six and seven teams respectively. The groups were drawn in advance by the organizer.
- The teams played each other once in the group phase, meaning that each team had at least five or six matches. First and second place qualified for the knockout phase (semi-finals, third place match, final). A quarter-final was not played due to time constraints. The number of points (win: 3 points, draw: 1 point, loss: 0 points) was decisive for the placement within the groups. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison of the teams concerned (goal difference) was decisive. No points were awarded in the knockout phase; the winning team of a match progressed to the next round. In the event of a tie, the game went into extra time: which team had the ball was decided by drawing lots. The game was played until one team scored a goal and won the game.
- The game was played on a total of four XL table football tables with eight rods on each side. Each person operated two poles.
- All games were played to time. One game lasted 6 minutes.
- The team that was called up first played with the blue pieces.
- The presenter announced the start and end of the game by signal. Any goals scored before or after the signal did not count. There was no stoppage time.
- The kick-off was taken from the halfway line. Who got the first ball was decided by drawing lots ("right to serve"). After that, the team that conceded the last goal always got the ball.
- There was a time limit of 12 seconds per pole from first contact. In the defensive area, i.e. goalkeeper and 2-man line, this rule applied to both poles together. In any case, this meant that the ball had to be played on for a maximum of 12 seconds after first contact. If the time limit was exceeded, the ball was thrown in through the throw-in hole for the opposing team.
- Goals were allowed from all lines, even from midfield or the goalkeeper. If the ball bounced out of the goal after a shot, the goal still counted. If the ball remained on the line and more than 50% of it was behind the goal line, the ball also counted as a goal. Goals scored directly after the kick-off did not count if no other player touched the ball.
- If the ball left the pitch, it was put back into play at the nearest corner by the respective goalkeeper. If it left the pitch in the middle of the table, it was put back into play through the throw-in hole in the middle by the team that had conceded the last goal. If a team deliberately hit the ball so that it left the table, the ball was thrown in through the throw-in hole for the opposing team.
- Multiple spinning of the poles was prohibited and was considered a violation of the rules. A 360° rotation of the figure before and after touching the ball was permitted.
- Lifts ("aerials") were prohibited and were considered a breach of the rules.
- Massively hitting the rods, shaking, lifting the table and any external influence were prohibited and were considered a breach of the rules.
- You were only allowed to reach into the pitch with the express permission of the referee.
- Infringements resulted in the ball being lost and the ball being thrown in through the throw-in hole for the opposing team. However, if one team was in possession of the ball while the opposing team was actively infringing the rules, the team in possession of the ball was awarded a free kick. Following the free kick, play was restarted from the original position.
- After every interruption in the game, be it a goal, a dropped or bounced ball, a foul or a discussion between the players, the player with the ball had to ask his opponent if he was ready. The game only continued after confirmation.
- No drinks may be placed on the table football tables.
The focus was on fairness. If there were to be any questions about the rules during a game that are not explained here, all players were required to agree within the framework of fairness or to use a coin toss to reach a decision. The decisions made by the referee were final.
