Weltladen – fair shopping in the fan-shaped city

The Weltladen opened in a new location at Lammstraße 7a on July 1, 2025, where it delights the residents of Karlsruhe with a colorful and, above all, fair range of products.

For many years, the Weltladen in Karlsruhe has been a popular store for products, food, and clothing sourced exclusively from fair trade. Until recently located at Kronenplatz in Karlsruhe, the Weltladen opened its doors for the first time at its new location at Lammstraße 7a on July 1, 2025. "We searched for a long time for the perfect shop for the Weltladen and were delighted when we found these beautiful premises, within walking distance of the market square," explains Katrin Lunkenheimer, from the board of the association "Aktion eine Welt" (AEW e.V.), which runs the Weltladen. With great attention to detail, the Weltladen team has created a bright and friendly store here: "We brought some elements from our previous address and also took over shelves and changing rooms from the previous store – sustainability is also very important to us when it comes to the interior," says Katrin. What is special about the Weltladen team is that the majority of the employees here work on a voluntary basis. Most of them have regular hours and come in once a week for a three- to four-hour shift. According to Katrin Lunkenheimer, the store needs over 30 volunteers to cover the opening hours as much as possible. This also makes it possible to keep product prices reasonable, despite the better pay for producers. 

A colorful assortment on Lammstraße in Karlsruhe

As soon as you enter the store, you notice the many display areas with colorful and carefully selected products. "Of course, we only stock fair trade products here, and most of our food is certified organic," explains Lunkenheimer. The Weltladen's range includes, for example:

• Books
• dried fruit

and much more. "My personal favorite product is the dried mangoes from the PREDA organization, imported by 'Weltpartner'. Not only are they delicious, they also have a story behind them," says Katrin. PREDA focuses on children's rights, and purchasing their products helps give children in need in the Philippines a better life. In principle, every product in the Weltladen has a special story behind it. "You can often find this on the products themselves, or there are QR codes that you can scan for more information. That's the beauty of our range: you're not just buying a product, you're helping to make the world a little bit better," says Katrin. The Weltladen team is particularly proud of its clothing section, which has now been expanded in the new store. Two changing rooms now make it easier to try on items directly.

Another new product group that has been added to the carefully selected range is tomato products from NoCap in Italy. Purchasing these products helps refugees in southern Italy by providing them with fair employment contracts, fair wages, decent accommodation, and assistance with integration. 

Lending library of the Weltladen in Karlsruhe

Books about Africa, globalization, economics, and human rights—at the back of the Weltladen, there is a lending library that invites anyone interested to browse at their leisure. "We also continue to offer our learning folders for schools and clubs, which delve even deeper into the various topics," says Katrin. The offer covers the specific topics of raising awareness for sustainable development in a local and global context, as well as promoting a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
