Zum Kleinen Ketterer – German cuisine, new to downtown Karlsruhe

Reopened on May 24, 2026, at Lidellplatz in Karlsruhe, Marc-Frederick Leuwer’s Gasthaus zum Kleinen Ketterer is now one of the new culinary highlights of downtown Karlsruhe, delighting guests with its rustic tavern atmosphere and a menu featuring traditional Baden-style home-style cooking.

Whether you’re spending a relaxing evening with friends in the beer garden, enjoying a hearty lunch with coworkers, or celebrating in rustic style with authentic Baden cuisine—you can do it all at “Zum Kleinen Ketterer” at Adlerstraße 34 in Karlsruhe. Marc-Frederick Leuwer had his eye on this very special property, located on Karlsruhe’s idyllic Lidellplatz, for quite some time. “I’ve always really liked the traditional tavern concept, and I wanted to bring delicious, reliable home-style cooking back to Karlsruhe,” explains the owner. The historic establishment at Adlerstraße 34 can look back on a long history and has stood for hospitality and authentic cuisine since 1790. The owner has preserved some of this tradition and history, reimagined other aspects entirely, and also freshly renovated the premises. The result is a place where the people of Karlsruhe can feel at home and enjoy traditional Baden cuisine. Divided into two dining rooms, guests experience authentic tavern charm here. But the highlight at Zum Kleinen Ketterer is definitely the selection of dishes. “Our cuisine is typical German cuisine: regional, seasonal, and authentic,” explains Leuwer. “We only serve what we all stand for,” he adds. So on the menu , for example:

The team has also thought of the little guests and offers classics like Spätzle with sauce, a small schnitzel with fries, or Serviettenknödel. Those with a sweet tooth will also be in for a treat, because the dessert selection tastes just like home: ice cream, Kaiserschmarren, or apple strudel with vanilla sauce are waiting to be tried!

In addition to the dining rooms, the restaurant has another highlight in store: its large, on-site beer garden, located under the trees at Lidellplatz in Karlsruhe. Especially now, on sunny days and balmy summer nights, the restaurant’s beer garden is a truly relaxing and refreshing place to be. And here’s a special bonus for parents: there’s a children’s playground right next door!

Enjoy a freshly poured Radler, a cool iced tea, or a sparkling wine spritzer made with the winery’s own “zum Kleinen Ketterer Wein” from the Emil Bauer Winery in the Palatinate, the warm temperatures are a breeze to handle.

The owner also reveals: “We’ll also have a separate outdoor bar this weekend. Plus, we’ll be hosting regular beer tastings here.”
