Diyar – the cozy café on Kronenplatz in Karlsruhe

Opened on September 21, 2024, Café Diyar has been delighting the people of Karlsruhe for nearly two years now with its hospitality, fine coffee specialties, bowls, and waffles, as well as a very special initiative that supports the education of girls in Afghanistan.

With her café and teahouse, owner Khaterah Tukhi has fulfilled a very special dream and created a place where cultures come together to enjoy delicious food and drinks, exchange ideas, and do some good in the process. Because Diyar—which means “home” in German—is not just a café, but also a charity project aimed at providing education for Afghan girls. “Diyar is where enjoyment creates a future. With every cup of coffee or meal, our guests support education for girls in Afghanistan. A large portion of the café’s proceeds goes to the local female teachers who educate the girls,” the owner explains proudly.

Hailing from Afghanistan herself, it was important to the owner to create a place here in Karlsruhe where people from all cultures could come together and to bring a little piece of her homeland to the “Fan City”—and she has definitely succeeded in doing so.

The people of Karlsruhe are warmly welcomed at Diyar and treated to a variety of delicacies. The bowls, which owner Khaterah prepares fresh, are especially worth trying. Another real hidden gem are the house-made waffle creations, which range from a “Berry Dream” to waffles with creamy Lotus-Biscoff spread or pistachio cream, all the way to the classic versions with Nutella or powdered sugar.

Diyar also leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to its selection of beverages. Those who prefer the classics will find a full range of coffee specialties here, such as espresso, latte macchiato, and Milchcafé. For anyone looking to try something new or exotic, the menu also features drinks from Khaterah’s homeland: saffron tea, sheer chai—a milk tea with cardamom and rose water—as well as classic Persian black and green teas. For the warmer months, Diyar offers a separate summer menu that brings Persian influences to Karlsruhe with drinks like Persian lemonade and saffron milkshakes. Drinks like these are a rare find in Karlsruhe.

At Diyar, located at Kronenstraße 28, there’s more to discover than just delicious bowls and exotic drinks: namely, a small section inside the café where the owner sells Persian and Afghan foods such as

sold. “Combining the café and the shop was just the perfect fit, and it allowed me to bring together my passion for products from my homeland and my love for the café,” says the owner. But that’s not all: Together with her daughter Negi Tukhi, Khatera also offers Diyar Café catering.
