Stephanplatz
The shopping place par excellence
As a large square behind the well-known Postgalerie shopping center, Stephanplatz offers plenty of open space, which is also actively used!
Description
A colorful weekly market offers the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, sausage and cheese or flowers three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Several flea markets have also established themselves on Stephanplatz. The second-hand markets normally take place on the first Saturday of every month. Its location right next to the Postgalerie shopping center makes the square a shopping destination par excellence - both indoors and outdoors!
When the Reichspost was built on today's Europaplatz around 1900, a public square with a park and fountain was to be created behind it. The architect Hermann Billing was directly commissioned to design the fountain. Sculptor Hermann Binz carried out the design. In a circle with 14 pillars, male grimaces - caricatures of Karlsruhe personalities of the time - are placed on the inside, spitting into the fountain basin in the direction of the female nude figure standing in the middle. A well-designed provocation against the conservative heads of the city. These hermeneutic heads were already the subject of controversial discussion in the local council when they were first designed, but Hermann Billing had been contractually assured in advance of artistic freedom of design while keeping within the budget. The fountain has changed its position slightly several times in the meantime, but has retained its elegance and wit over time.
