Karlsruhe Art Museum
Founded in 1981, the Kunstmuseum Karlsruhe, formerly the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, is one of the best-known art museums in southwestern Germany. Since 1997, it has been located in Hallenbau the ZKM | Center for Art and Media.
The fascinating architecture of this listed industrial building houses temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection on three floors. As Karlsruhe's museum of modern and contemporary art, the Kunstmuseum Karlsruhe, formerly the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, combines presentations from its own collection with new positions.Â
The permanently updated exhibition displays a selection of the most significant artworks owned by the city and from the renowned Garnatz Collection, which was given to the museum on permanent loan in 1996. The focus is on art in Karlsruhe and southwestern Germany since the 19th century, as well as German art from 1945 to the present day. The collection comprises a total of around 20,000 works from the Romantic period through Modernism and the post-war period to the present day.
The exhibitions are often accompanied by special programs, educational offerings, and projects that involve regional artists and international positions.
